Stan Calvert Match Report
Northumbria Rugby League
30 v Newcastle Rugby League 16
Northumbria University took on National League North opposition
Newcastle in the annual Stan Calvert fixtures hoping to make
it a 4th win in 4 years. Newcastle were still smarting from the injury time loss to Northumbria the year before at Bullocksteads
and had home advantage this time round with the fixture staged at Cochrane Park.
The game got under way at
a frantic pace and both sides looked nervous in the opening stages, Northumbria’s errors giving Newcastle good field
position which they capitalised on when their loose-forward powered over out wide, the resulting conversion was missed by
the Newcastle Scrum-Half who was to go on to have a terrible day with the boot.
Northumbria 0 - Newcastle 4
Intense defence from Northumbria
saw them forcing Newcastle back into their own territory as Northumbria began to control the game through half backs Neil
Thorman and Lee Jardine, it was indeed Thorman who held the key to the first Northumbria try, a beautifully weighted pass
allowed Dave Vernon a gap to the line to score under the posts, Thorman adding the extras. Northumbria
6 - Newcastle 4
The game then went up a
notch as Newcastle started to try to deliver the big hit that might change the game however
Northumbria gained the advantage again with Dave Vernon dancing his way
through the Newcastle defence to score, the conversion was missed by Thorman but Northumbria led by 6 points.
Northumbria 10 – Newcastle 4
The Newcastle restart was sent deep and confusion in the Northumbria
ranks resulted in a penalty for Newcastle, they moved the
ball well and this resulted in their hooker sneaking over from the play of the ball in the corner, again the conversion was
missed.
Northumbria 10 – Newcastle 8
With a new
sense of determination Northumbria took the game to Newcastle determined to extend their lead and we unlucky not to do so as Matt Walton had
a seemingly good try disallowed for a knock on over the line. Northumbria
did score minutes later when Neil Thorman showed a good dummy and slid over just to the left of the uprights. The conversion
was then slotted over by Thorman to extend the lead to 8.
Northumbria 16 – Newcastle 8
Unfortunately
complacency snuck in to the Northumbria game and just before half time
a cheeky blind side move from a scrum resulted in the Newcastle winger finishing well in the
corner, the conversion was missed and Northumbria
took a 4 point lead in to the break.
HT: Northumbria 16 – Newcastle

The second
half started at the same tempo as the game had been played for the last forty minutes, both teams battering each other in
an attempt to gain superiority but it was again Northumbria who seized
the advantage as indiscipline began to sneak into the Newcastle
game. Consecutive penalties resulted in centre Shaun Gilmour powering over from 5 metres out to extend the lead, Thorman added
the conversion
Northumbria 22 – Newcastle 12
The next 10
minutes were all Northumbria as they began to fire on all cylinders and
really start to push Newcastle back. The undoubtedly best
move of the game was ruled out for a very suspect knock on and would have seen Northumbria
further ahead. Newcastle’s continued indiscipline did allow Thorman to slot over and
easy penalty and push Northumbria further
ahead.
Northumbria 24 – Newcastle 12
The next few
minutes saw the ball change hands rapidly as errors started to creep into the games of both teams and somehow Newcastle managed to begin to get on top. Northumbria
however held out and strong defence from second row Sam Barker, centre Matt Walton, fullback Gavin Houston and winger Craig
Gavin prevented Newcastle from increasing their point’s
total.
With the game
for the taking as the final 10 minutes approached Northumbria extended their lead further with Matt Walton scoring a great
effort, breaking the line before stepping the fullback to score under the sticks, Thorman again adding the extras.
Northumbria 30 – Newcastle 12
The game was
now all but won and it seemed that Northumbria eased up slightly and in doing so allowed the strong running Newcastle centre
to crash over, again the kick was missed.
Northumbria 30 – Newcastle 16
The last five
minutes were a tense affair with Newcastle pushing to get back in to the game but Northumbria were able to hold out for the
win!
Notable performances for
Northumbria came from Dave Vernon and Matt Walton but the Man of the Match
award went to Neil Thorman who inspired the Northumbria
team and controlled the game from the start.
